Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range 紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道

Inscribed 2004CulturalWakayama, Nara, Mie

Three sacred mountain areas — Yoshino/Omine, the Kumano shrines and Koyasan — linked by pilgrimage routes through the forested Kii Peninsula. Shinto and Buddhist traditions have intertwined here for over 1,200 years, and the routes, lined with stone markers and cedar trees, are still walked today.
