Shrines and Temples of Nikko 日光の社寺

Inscribed 1999CulturalTochigi

Over a hundred Shinto and Buddhist buildings in the sacred mountains of Nikko, many dating to the 17th century. The lavishly carved Toshogu shrine — mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate — together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinno-ji Temple, blends buildings into the cedar forest according to Shinto ideas of harmony with nature.
