Ogasawara Islands 小笠原諸島
Inscribed 2011NaturalTokyo
An archipelago of around 30 oceanic islands some 1,000 km south of Tokyo that has never been connected to a continent. Isolation produced large numbers of endemic species — the Bonin flying fox, hundreds of native plants and land snails — making the islands a living record of evolution.
