Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites 富岡製糸場と絹産業遺産群

Inscribed 2014CulturalGunma

The government-built Tomioka Silk Mill (1872) brought French machinery and expertise to a traditional silk region and helped make Japan the world's top raw-silk exporter. The mill, a model sericulture farmhouse, a sericulture school and a natural cold-storage for silkworm eggs survive together.
